What Was Holding This Deck Post?
During this inspection, a metal joist hanger was visible around a vertical post at an elevated deck. The wide photograph shows where the connection sits; the close-up shows the hardware itself.

What We Observed
The hanger appears to be used at a post connection rather than at the end of a horizontal joist. Several holes in the hardware appear unfilled. Paint covers much of the connection, making some installation details difficult to see.
The photographs document the visible arrangement. They do not establish how the post is attached elsewhere or how much force this connection can resist.
Why It Matters
A connector needs to suit the member it supports and be installed with the specified fasteners. A joist hanger used at a deck post should not be assumed to provide the connection that post requires.
Because this is part of an elevated deck, the post connection deserves a closer evaluation. A finished coat of paint can make the hardware look complete while concealing details that matter.
What Buyers Should Know
A qualified deck contractor or structural engineer should identify the post’s purpose, check the connector and fasteners, and determine whether the connection needs correction.
This finding shows why a deck inspection includes its connections as well as its visible walking surface.
